Abstract Introduction. Virtual communities play an important role in innovation. The paper focuses on the particular form of collective action in virtual communities underlying as Open Source software development projects. Method. Building on resource mobilization theory and private‐collective innovation, we propose a theory of collective action in innovative virtual communities. We identify three communal resources reputation, control over technology and learning opportunitiess that appear as a byproduct while developing open source software. Analysis. Constructs are derived from exiting literature. Empirical data from Freenet, an open source software project for peer‐to‐peer software, illustrates both the levels of involvement and the communal resources. Results & conclusions. Communal resources are able to solve the collective action dilemma for virtual communities. We show that they increase in value for individuals along with their involvement in the community.

Analyzing Firm Participation in Open Source Communities
The emergence of open source software (OSS) communities, in which individual contributors freely share their innovations, has presented organizations with new opportunities to sell their software products and services (Von Hippel & Von Krogh, 2003). Well-known examples of firms that use the communal resources of OSS communities are IBM, SUN, and Red Hat. These and other organizations hope to be...

The world of Open Source software has demonstrated the remarkable appeal of communal software development. Large number of software projects can leverage, reuse, and coordinate their work through Internet and web-based technology. For example, SourceForge currently hosts about sixty thousand software systems. Similar strategies have been suggested for corporate software development, through not...

متن کاملUnderstanding Open Source Communities as Complex Adaptive Systems: A Case of the R Project Community
Open source communities evolve. This evolution is, at times, driven by corporate engagement with those communities. In these corporate-communal contexts, open source foundations often serve as facilitators in the evolution process and make these arrangements more stable over time. This paper expands the application of complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory to understand the role of open source f...
متن کاملEnforcement of Communal Policies for P2P Systems
We consider the question of how to establish and enforce communal policies for peer-to-peer (P2P) communities. Generally, members of each P2P community must conform to an application specific communal policy if the community is to operate smoothly and securely. An open question, however, is how can such communal policies be established reliably and in a scalable manner? While some communities c...
